The Wild Hunt of Odin (Åsgårdsreien), by Peter Nicolai Arbo (1872)

Sale price$179.99

Åsgårdsreien — The Wild Hunt of Odin — painted by the Norwegian artist Peter Nicolai Arbo in 1872. Across a moonlit midwinter sky, a spectral horde of riders storms forward on foaming black horses, Odin's ravens at their heels and Thor thundering ahead with hammer raised. The original oil-on-canvas hangs in the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo.

Arbo built the painting on Norse mythology and the National Romantic poetry of his day — above all Johan Sebastian Welhaven's 1844 poem of the same name. Its doomsday mood and the contrast of light and shadow, life and death, made it one of the defining images of the Norse revival, later embraced across folk and metal culture. A museum-grade reproduction on gallery canvas, hand-stretched and ready to hang.
